Agates: Lake Superior agates are highly sought after by collectors. While the western U.P. is especially famous for agates, any Lake Superior beach with fresh gravel—including those near Bay Mills—can yield these colorful, banded stones, especially after storms or in early spring.
Yooperlites: These are grey syenite rocks containing fluorescent sodalite that glow orange or yellow under UV light. Yooperlites can be found along Lake Superior beaches, and nighttime hunts with a UV flashlight are especially rewarding. Early spring, after winter storms, is the best time, as new rocks are exposed. The beaches near Bay Mills are suitable for hunting, though patience and the right equipment (UV light) are key.
Point Iroquois Light Station, located just west of Bay Mills along Lake Superior, is a historic lighthouse and museum open to the public. Visitors can climb the 72 steps to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Lake Superior, Whitefish Bay, and the St. Marys River. The museum inside the keeper’s house features exhibits on local maritime history, lighthouse technology, and the lives of the keepers and their families.

The Bay Mills area offers several beautiful, sandy beaches along Lake Superior, including Chippewa Landing of the Bay Mills (half-mile stretch of soft white sand), Pendills Beach (one mile of golden sand with large rocks in the water), and public beaches at Bay Mills Resort & Casino and Brimley State Park.
These beaches are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and beachcombing. Amenities vary but often include parking, restrooms, and picnic areas. Brimley State Park also features grassy day-use areas, playgrounds, and campgrounds.

The clear, cold waters of Lake Superior offer unique freshwater snorkeling and diving experiences. While water temperatures are chilly even in summer, visibility is excellent—often 20 to 50 feet or more, especially in protected bays and near shipwrecks.
Best Spots: Snorkelers and recreational divers can explore near-shore areas, rock formations, and shallow shipwrecks. The Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve (see below) is a premier destination for advanced divers, but shallow wrecks and reefs can be explored with snorkeling gear or light scuba equipment.

This 376-square-mile preserve protects and conserves historic shipwrecks in the waters around Whitefish Point, at the southeastern end of Lake Superior. Established in 1987, it is known for deep, well-preserved shipwrecks in crystal-clear water.
Diving: The preserve is a destination for technical divers due to the depth and cold temperatures of many wrecks (30–270 feet). Notable wrecks include the schooner Niagara, steamer Panther, and steel freighters like John B. Cowle and Superior City. Mooring buoys mark major dive sites.
Snorkeling: While most wrecks are deep, some shallow sites and nearshore areas are suitable for snorkeling. Visibility is excellent, and the cold water helps preserve the wrecks.
Access: Boat launches are available at Whitefish Point, Brimley State Park, and Bay Mills. Divers must be experienced and properly equipped for cold, deep water.
Nearby Shipwrecks: The area is close to the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve, which contains many shipwrecks, but most are located further offshore and at greater depths than typical snorkeling or recreational diving. Shallow, accessible wrecks are rare in this immediate area.
