Shoreline

The shoreline of Bay Mills, Michigan is a peaceful and picturesque stretch along the edge of Lake Superior. With rocky beaches, gentle waves, and views that seem to go on forever, it’s a perfect spot for quiet reflection, kayaking, or simply enjoying the natural beauty. Whether at sunrise or sunset, the shoreline offers a serene escape in every season.

Paddling

Paddling in Bay Mills offers access to the stunning waters of Lake Superior and the surrounding bays. The area is known for its scenic beauty, calm waters in protected bays like Waishkey Bay, and proximity to the Lake Superior East Water Trail. Paddlers can enjoy a variety of routes, from short trips along the shoreline to longer excursions exploring nearby islands and river mouths. The water is typically clear and cool, with opportunities to see wildlife and enjoy peaceful, undeveloped landscapes.

SUP and kayak rentals at casino

Bay Mills Resort & Casino provides kayak rentals for guests looking to spend time on the water. While stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rentals are not currently available, the casino is a hub for water-based recreation and may offer additional paddle sports depending on the season and availability. The resort’s location on Waishkey Bay makes it a convenient and scenic starting point for paddling adventures, with easy access to both calm bay waters and the open lake.

Launch site for paddle sports at boat launch nearby (water trail)

There are several public access points for launching paddle craft along the Bay Mills shoreline:

  • Bay Mills Point Boat Launch: This is an undeveloped Michigan DNR boat launch located on Sawmill Point Road, suitable for small craft and paddle sports. Parking is available, but there are no restrooms.
  • Bay Mills Resort & Casino: Offers developed boat access with a large parking area, marina, and public restrooms. The launch is less than 50 yards from parking and is signed along the road for easy access.
  • Bay Mills Riverview RV Campground: Provides carry-in access for paddle craft, with gravel parking and modern restrooms available for campers.

These sites are part of the Lake Superior East Water Trail, which is designed to provide safe, accessible, and enjoyable paddling experiences for all skill levels.

Rock hunting (Agates & Yooperlites)

The Bay Mills shoreline is an excellent place for rock hunting, with Lake Superior’s beaches known for their rich diversity of stones:

Agates: Lake Superior agates are highly sought after by collectors. While the western U.P. is especially famous for agates, any Lake Superior beach with fresh gravel—including those near Bay Mills—can yield these colorful, banded stones, especially after storms or in early spring.

Yooperlites: These are grey syenite rocks containing fluorescent sodalite that glow orange or yellow under UV light. Yooperlites can be found along Lake Superior beaches, and nighttime hunts with a UV flashlight are especially rewarding. Early spring, after winter storms, is the best time, as new rocks are exposed. The beaches near Bay Mills are suitable for hunting, though patience and the right equipment (UV light) are key.

Lighthouse/trail exploration at Point Iroquois

Point Iroquois Light Station, located just west of Bay Mills along Lake Superior, is a historic lighthouse and museum open to the public. Visitors can climb the 72 steps to the top of the tower for panoramic views of Lake Superior, Whitefish Bay, and the St. Marys River. The museum inside the keeper’s house features exhibits on local maritime history, lighthouse technology, and the lives of the keepers and their families.

Trails: The grounds include boardwalks, rocky beaches, and grassy lawns, perfect for picnics and exploring. The area is part of Hiawatha National Forest, with nearby trails for hiking and nature walks.

Hours: The museum and tower are typically open daily from mid-May to mid-October. The grounds are accessible year-round.

Northern Lights

The Bay Mills area, with its dark skies and unobstructed views over Lake Superior, is an excellent spot for viewing the northern lights. The aurora is most visible between August and April, especially during the fall and spring equinoxes (September and March), and on clear, moonless nights.

Best Locations: Brimley State Park, Bay Mills Point, and other Lake Superior shoreline spots offer some of the best viewing opportunities in the Upper Peninsula.

Tips: Check aurora forecasts, dress warmly, and bring a camera for long exposures.

Sunsets

The Lake Superior shoreline near Bay Mills provides spectacular sunset views. The open water, rocky beaches, and high bluffs create dramatic backdrops for watching the sun dip below the horizon. Point Iroquois and Brimley State Park are particularly popular for sunset photography and relaxation.

The changing colors of the sky and water, combined with the peaceful surroundings, make sunset viewing a memorable experience.

Freighters

Lake Superior and the St. Marys River are major shipping routes for Great Lakes freighters. From Bay Mills, Point Iroquois, and other shoreline vantage points, visitors can watch massive ore carriers and other ships as they navigate between the Soo Locks and the open lake.

Best Spots: Point Iroquois Lighthouse offers elevated views of freighters entering and leaving Whitefish Bay. The ships are often visible during the day and sometimes at night with their navigation lights.

Birding

The Bay Mills area is a hotspot for birdwatching, especially during spring and fall migrations. The shoreline, bays, and nearby wetlands attract a wide variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds.

Best Locations: Brimley State Park (Waiska Bay), Point Iroquois, and the St. Marys River are excellent for spotting species such as Bonaparte’s Gull, Common Loon, and migrating raptors. The area is also known for rare bird sightings during migration.

Season: Fall is especially rewarding, with large numbers of migrating birds passing through.

Whitefish Point Bird Observatory

Located about an hour’s drive north of Bay Mills, Whitefish Point is one of the premier birding locations in North America. The observatory monitors and records thousands of birds during migration, including raptors, waterfowl, and rare species.

Visitors can watch birds from the observation deck, visit the museum, and learn about ongoing research and conservation efforts. The area is internationally recognized as a Globally Important Bird Area.

Hours: The outdoor spaces are open year-round from dawn to dusk.

Fishing

The Bay Mills shoreline offers outstanding fishing opportunities, particularly in Waishkey Bay and the St. Marys River. The area is managed by the Bay Mills Indian Community, which actively stocks and monitors fish populations, including walleye and northern pike.

Species: Common catches include walleye, perch, pike, and musky. The best fishing is typically in summer and fall, but angling is possible year-round.

Conservation: The Bay Mills Biological Services Department conducts research and management to ensure sustainable fisheries for the community and visitors.

Pendills Creek National Fish Hatchery

Located along the scenic Lake Superior shoreline in the Hiawatha National Forest, Pendills Creek National Fish Hatchery has produced native lake trout for stocking the Great Lakes since 1951. The facility raises over 1 million lake trout annually, supporting restoration efforts and fishery health.

Visiting: Self-guided tours allow visitors to see fish from eggs to yearlings, depending on the season. Guided tours for groups can be arranged by appointment. The hatchery is open Monday–Friday, with outdoor areas accessible on weekends. Across the road, there’s a day-use park with picnic tables, a boardwalk to the beach, and modern restrooms.

Activities: Educational programs, hatchery tours, fishing in Lake Superior and Pendills Creek, and swimming at the adjacent beach.

Swimming/relaxing at beaches

The Bay Mills area offers several beautiful, sandy beaches along Lake Superior, including Chippewa Landing of the Bay Mills (half-mile stretch of soft white sand), Pendills Beach (one mile of golden sand with large rocks in the water), and public beaches at Bay Mills Resort & Casino and Brimley State Park.

These beaches are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, and beachcombing. Amenities vary but often include parking, restrooms, and picnic areas. Brimley State Park also features grassy day-use areas, playgrounds, and campgrounds.

Many beaches allow dogs, but check local rules before visiting.

Freshwater snorkeling & diving

The clear, cold waters of Lake Superior offer unique freshwater snorkeling and diving experiences. While water temperatures are chilly even in summer, visibility is excellent—often 20 to 50 feet or more, especially in protected bays and near shipwrecks.

Best Spots: Snorkelers and recreational divers can explore near-shore areas, rock formations, and shallow shipwrecks. The Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve (see below) is a premier destination for advanced divers, but shallow wrecks and reefs can be explored with snorkeling gear or light scuba equipment.

Safety: Always dive with a buddy, wear appropriate thermal protection, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather and water conditions.

Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve

This 376-square-mile preserve protects and conserves historic shipwrecks in the waters around Whitefish Point, at the southeastern end of Lake Superior. Established in 1987, it is known for deep, well-preserved shipwrecks in crystal-clear water.

Diving: The preserve is a destination for technical divers due to the depth and cold temperatures of many wrecks (30–270 feet). Notable wrecks include the schooner Niagara, steamer Panther, and steel freighters like John B. Cowle and Superior City. Mooring buoys mark major dive sites.

Snorkeling: While most wrecks are deep, some shallow sites and nearshore areas are suitable for snorkeling. Visibility is excellent, and the cold water helps preserve the wrecks.

Access: Boat launches are available at Whitefish Point, Brimley State Park, and Bay Mills. Divers must be experienced and properly equipped for cold, deep water.

Nearby Shipwrecks: The area is close to the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve, which contains many shipwrecks, but most are located further offshore and at greater depths than typical snorkeling or recreational diving. Shallow, accessible wrecks are rare in this immediate area.

Snorkeling/Diving: Snorkelers and divers may find interesting underwater rock formations and occasional debris or small wreckage near the beach, but for major shipwreck exploration, the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve is the primary destination.
